Finding Cultural Matches Through Engaging Interviews

Finding Cultural Matches Through Engaging Interviews

October 17, 20242 min read

Let me share a little secret with you: hiring the right people is like hitting the jackpot for your company. But let's be real, interviews can feel a lot like a first date. You're both trying to figure out if there's a future together without showing all your cards.
Today, I want to give you some tips on how to ace interviews and find the perfect team member. It’s not just about filling a spot; it’s about finding someone who’ll thrive in your work place.

First, think about your company’s culture and the specific role you need to fill. I always say, prioritize culture and passion over skills and experience. Why? Because you can teach someone the ropes, but you can’t teach them to be loyal.

Tip one: Don’t spill all the details about your company’s culture, role, and values right away. It’s like giving them the test answers before the exam. Instead, ask open-ended questions that let candidates share their experiences. Ask about a great team they were part of or a supervisor they clicked with. This gives you a real look at their thoughts and interactions.

Tip two: Dive deeper. If they describe a positive leadership experience, ask why it mattered or how it shaped their approach to teamwork. Follow-up questions reveal more than rehearsed answers. It’s about discovering their true self.

Tip three: Stories reveal the truth. Ask them to share experiences, conflicts they’ve handled, or their views on workplace culture. For instance, asking about a team conflict and how they resolved it can show their conflict resolution skills and emotional intelligence.

Tip four: Take your time and involve others. Interviews shouldn’t be rushed. Choose a relaxed setting, like a coffee shop, to get to know the real person. Include team members in the process. Their insights are valuable, and it shows the candidate your culture from different angles.

In the end, defining your company culture, asking before telling, digging deep, encouraging stories, and involving your team are keys to a successful interview strategy. It’s about creating an environment where people are excited to work.

And if you’re feeling overwhelmed, remember that even top athletes and CEOs have coaches. You’re not alone in this.

In fact, our team can help you reach your company's goals.
